Mission: The Berkeley Manufacturing Institute creates tools and methods for High-Tech Product Design, Rapid Prototyping, Precision  Manufacturing, and Sustainable Manufacturing. Focus areas include: product innovation tools; the mathematics of product-shape; design for manufacturing; specific methods and machines for rapid-prototyping; consumer electronics manufacturing; the design and prototyping of wireless products within sensor networks; precision manufacture; sustainable manufacturing; and energy analysis in manufacture.

About: The Berkeley Manufacturing Institute is primarily centered within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley. Visitors may find us on the main laboratory floors (Rooms 1115-1117 1st floor and Rooms 2111-2117 on the 2nd floor). However we have strong affiliations (and click on the links below) with: The Center for Information Technology in the Interests of Society (CITRIS); The Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC); the Management of Technology Program (MOT); Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology (CET); the Center for the Built Environment (CBE); and many other Berkeley laboratories such as BSAC and the Micro lab.

For more information on BMI's labs, location , current research , publications , or members please visit these links.

The remainder of this site focuses on Professor Wright’s research on “Design and Manufacturing for Pervasive/Ubiquitous Wireless-Computing Environments” with a special emphasis on the Power Supply by Energy Scavenging and Innovative Storage. A Power point presentation (25 mb) is included to feature the following application areas:

  • Smart buildings especially Demand Response
  • Fire Rescue
  • Manufacturing
