Multi-Process Chain Tutorial

The fittings for a cast iron bed were used to explore the multi-process chain generator. The piece we are interested in making is the decorative connector for the bars, indicated by arrows in below. The “Sample Parts” library was opened, and “Cast Iron Bed Fitting” was selected.

This inserts the following facets are defined:

  • Batch Size = 50
  • Shapeid =Freeform General
  • Minimum Wall Thickness = 0.2 inches (Advanced Mode)
  • Maximum Wall Thickness = 0.5 (Advanced Mode)
  • Wall Web Span = 1.5 inches (Advanced Mode)
  • Volume l= 3.5 cubic inches
  • Cost per Part = Very High
  • Setup Cost = Medium
  • Surface Roughness = 250 microinches
  • Dimensional Accuracy = 30 mils
  • Setup Time = Weeks
  • Setup Cost = Very Low
  • Cost per Pound = $1/pound
  • Yield Strength = 65 KSI

From the results survey screen, it can be seen that both investment casting and sand casting meet our requirements. Upon consideration, it is decided that in order to simplify assembly, the holes that fit into the iron bars will be press fitted. Examining the help page for Surface Roughness, it is seen that a surface roughness of 64 is good for press fits. Could drilling out the cast holes be sufficient to meet the requirements? To find out, go to results survey, select the highest ranked combination, and select “Multi Process.” Below is the data entered for the hole, as well as the results. Drilling is sufficient to reach the desired tolerance, and will thus be enough for our design.
