This class is
"full" -- please advise?
This class is usually the biggest Mechanical Engineering class
(50+) and a Core MOT class so, like an All Night Diner - We
Never Close - If you are on the waiting list you are automatically
in the class OK. Even if you cannot get on the official waiting
list because it's also full keep coming to the class, make
sure the TA has you on our list and all will be well. But
I do not personally handle the records for UC! For COEs, the
6th Floor office in Etcheverry led by Pat Giddings is the
place to make sure in mid-October that your name is recorded.
For Haas students please make sure your office has you recorded.
In summary -- no matter what you are worried about -- you
are IN the class if you keep coming, work with your group
and use the book to do the work.

Differences
between this and the Beckman/Agogino class?
My class is more engineering "hands-on." Your group
will use CAD, generate a file called an STL file send it to
a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) Machine (look at page 145
of my book) and create a Wearable/Mobile/Inconspicuous Computer
prototype. The other class is more general covering product
development from market analysis to sales. I do less in those
areas.
-
I'm not in ME
(or any engineering discipline) will I be lost?
No -- the book is self explanatory, the grade is 50% on the
project and I don't delve into equations. Can we do another
project instead? "Yes" if it is broadly in the radio/GPS/wearable/consumer/inconspicuous
product category described in the Appendix, but "No"
if it does not involve CAD/STL/FDM prototyping
-
Will our group
have a budget?
Yes -- $100, plus the "inner electronic brains",
plus an overnight run on the FDM machine (worth about $300).
-
How many people
are in the group?
Typically 5-6 are in a group.
-
Should I take
notes - will the slides be available?
The book 21st Century Manufacturing - has been prepared especially
for this class and all the material will come from it. It’s
a recommended (not required) text. All my slides will be posted
on the class site.
-
I'm finding
other names for this class -- why? and is that right?
The old names are Intelligent (or Advanced) Manufacturing
Systems and eManuafacture.com. I like to change it to suit
the new content and the times. But ‘old-links' on Websites
die hard
