Equipped with five pressure sensors and two wireless motes, the GaitCoach is a product to help correct and monitor walking gait. In the intended design, there are two basic components to the GaitCoach - an insole and a small feedback unit. The insole is to be worn as an insert in the shoe, and comes in different sizes to accommodate different foot sizes. It has five pressure sensors located on various parts of the sole, which all connect to a mote attach at the top of the foot. This mote then sends a real-time wireless signal to the second mote, located in the wristwatch-sized feedback unit. This unit comes with a nylon band with which you can strap onto your wrist and wear like a watch. To account for the various sensory limitations of different users, you can choose from visual, tactile, or both feedback methods. Using pre configured settings, the mote in the feedback unit calculates the information sent by the mote located on the foot. The feedback component will then vibrate if pressure is being overapplied or applied incorrectly; visually, the LED will switch from green to red. In addition to providing real-time results, the GaitCoach interfaces with laptops to give progress reports over time. Our current prototype implements this second feature. The mote on the foot
interfaces with the base station and the force sensor data is sent into a file which then can be used to track the patient’s progress. Powered by vibrations and movement, the GaitCoach is your personal coach to track and
improve your gait.
