There are 240 reported stolen bicycles per year on
UC Berkeley campus. Not to mention the vast amount of money lost
to bicycles theft nation-wide.
The mission statement of the SmartLock team is to reduce the number
of bicycles stolen and helps bicycle owners to protect their bicycles
more efficiently. SmartLock is a bicycle security device that is
used to notify people when their bicycles are being tampered with.
SmartLock has two main components, a unique lock and a remote. The
lock is equipped with a force sensor, an alarm and a mote. The remote
is installed with another mote. The remote can be attached on a
key chain. These two motes allow the unique lock and the remote
to communicate with each other wirelessly within a short range.
Once a bicycle is being tampered with, the force sensor in the lock
senses the external pressure and triggers the mote that activates
the alarm and sends a signal to the remote immediately. Once the
mote inside the remote receives this alarm signal, the remote beeps
to notify the owner that his/her bicycle is about to be stolen!
Using the On/Off button, the bicycle owner can activate or deactivate
the alarm. The LED on the remote can notify the owner whether the
lock is armed and the remote is within the range to communicate
with the lock. This lock will be initially priced at $149. Mass
production will drive the cost of the lock down to $89. The potential
market includes bikes sold in Europe and Asia as well as the United
States. Our potential market size is about $300 million. |
