Mindy Talmadge, BC Kirk Richardson, Jonathan Levit On Monday, July 31, the students on the FIRE project presented their work to the SFFD, Discovery Channel, and Wired Magazine. This was both in preparation for Wired's NextFest, and to demo the FIRE system to the SFFD. A Lieutenant and a Battalion Chief represented the SFFD, while a film crew and Jonathan Levit, the host of the Discovery Channel’s *Miracle Hunters* show, were there for Wired. All activities were filmed for a spot that will appear on the Science and Discovery Channels during NextFest. We started by giving an overview of the three subsystems: eICS, SmokeNet, and FireEye. Our first demonstration used our new pager motes. This is an extra compact battery operated mote that can be worn like a pager and tracks your location. A student walked around the building while wearing the pager mote, was tracked by SmokeNet, and his location was displayed on the eICS. Next we had the Chief wear the FireEye and navigate around Etcheverry Hall. We demonstrated abbreviated text messaging from the eICS to the FireEye, such as the “go to location X feature.” He liked what he saw and gave some useful feedback. We then discussed future work and ideas for improvement. Many good suggestions came out of this, some of which we hope to implement for NextFest in late September. Interviews then took place, in which Jonathan asked the firefighters about their reactions, and the students about their research and future plans. Overall it went very well, and it was quite motivational for the students. We’re looking forward to making strides in our research, working more with different fire departments like Chicago, Berkeley, and San Francisco, and of course going to NextFest.
